July 2020 Update | The North Coast 500 is now open, but there are new regulations and restrictions in place for tourism and daily life in Scotland due to the pandemic - we have discussed these in more detail in our cornerstone article 23 Things To Know Before Driving the North Coast 500. We’ve marked these with an ADR next to their name! There is a minimum 6-night stay so will not suit most taking on the route - but we wanted to give it a mention anyway! That extra £20 will be worth it (and we say this as two people who have done a lot of budget travel over the years and sometimes been a little too zealous on cheap over charming). The majority (and the best) of the accommodation is not in the small towns of Wick and Thurso - it's in the idyllic and wild rural areas which the NC500 brings you to. If you're arriving early into the city from elsewhere in Scotland, and want to hit the road as soon as possible, then you could quite easily choose to stay at one or two excellent places 20-50 miles into the route. Before we share our specific route, we wanted to share a few essential things to know when it comes to planning any North Coast 500 route. This section of the route involves various pods and B&Bs right by some of the best beaches, as well as a selection with stunning loch views, and is deserving of more than just one night. There is no strict North Coast 500 route – where you stop, stay and play is entirely up to you but here is a flavour of the villages and activities we think make up the best North Coast 500 places to visit.
